God, Did You Hear Me?! -Bible Study

Sheila’s cry for help

“God, are you even listening?!” cried Sheila as she receives, yet, another rejection letter. She’s been looking for work for the past few months and haven’t landed anything. She has prayed time and time again for God to make way for her, and all she’s been hearing is terrible news. Sheila is barely making ends meet, and on top of that, she just got notice that her car was to be repossessed if she didn’t make at least one payment.

Frustrated, Sheila threw her Bible across the room. “God, why aren’t you listening to me? Can’t you see that I need your help! What am I supposed to do?!” Sheila ranted on for quite some time until she was hoarse.

Once calm, she walked over to where her Bible landed, picked it up, and began to weep loudly. Sheila was in desperate need of a breakthrough. With warm tears flowing down her face, she opened up her Bible and flipped to a verse that she has come to know well. 1 John 5:14 reads, “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.” Although Sheila was upset and didn’t know what her next move was going to be, deep down, she knew that God heard her cries and that He would come through for her.

The very next day, Sheila spoke a prayer asking for guidance and faith that she would land a job soon. Not just any job, a career doing what she loved most. Writing has always been a passion for her, and she dreamed of one day running her own lifestyle magazine. Knowing that that dream was way down the road, she’s settled with trying to find work utilizing her writing skills. Not even a week later, Sheila received a call from a local magazine asking if she would be available to come in for an interview. She almost screamed “yes” into the phone. She went in and was immediately hired. Sheila gave God plenty of praise. Sheila could, now, pay her bills on time all while doing what she loved most, writing.

The importance of praying and believing

It’s easy to pray and believe when things are going well. But, can you keep that same faith when things aren’t going so well? When going through a tough time, we want to immediately get out of it. So, we find ourselves praying and begging God to get us out of whatever situation is causing discomfort. What we fail to realize is that growth and faith require some uncomfortable situations.

There came a time in my life where I would pray that God would help me heal from past mistakes, abuse, and everything else that was causing pain in my life. From my point of view, it seemed as though God was not listening to me AT ALL. I quickly learned that God was ready and willing to help me heal, BUT I needed to be ready and willing to do what I needed to do to heal. I had to let some people go. I had to face the fact that I couldn’t blame anyone anymore for anything. I had to take responsibility for my actions. Once I came to that conclusion, I begin to heal from what was hurting me.

God is listening to you! Whatever you are in need of, go to Him with the faith that whatever you ask, you will receive. Be bold in your prayers.

  1. This is the verse I turn to. It’s my life verse as well.

Show me Your ways, O Yahweh; teach me Your paths. Lead me in Your truth and teach me, for You are the God of my salvation; on You I wait all the day.

    -Psalm 25:4โ€ญ-โ€ฌ5
