I was scrolling on Twitter the other day when I came across this tweet:
Reading that tweet multiple times brought back memories of when I was a young child. When I was younger, I had a tough time using my words. As much as I wanted to speak, I was constantly reminded why it was best to stay silent.
Sometimes I would see something that wasn’t right at home, and whenever I would speak out about it, I would be punished. There were times when I stood up for myself and would be threatened to be kicked out. Silence became my best friend.
Now, as a twenty-nine-year-old woman, I’m finally learning to use my voice respectfully, without fearing what others say. It took many bouts of being disrespected and verbally abused for me to get to a place where enough was enough.
I consistently pray to God for guidance on this growth journey because of daily challenges.
I want to encourage those who may struggle with speaking up to USE YOUR WORDS! Stop allowing others to disrespect you. Stop allowing fear to stop you from speaking up for yourself and others. Quit letting the fear of what will happen to prevent you from going after the things you want.
You got this!
